What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for help with everyday tasks while you live in a shared home — things like cooking, personal care, medication, and getting out into the community. It's designed for people who need support available around the clock, not just a few hours a day.

With SIL, you don't live in a facility. You live in a normal home, in a normal street, with housemates — and a team of support workers is there whenever you need them, day and night.

SIL funding covers your support workers. Everyday living costs — rent, groceries, bills — are paid separately, usually from your own income, and we help you set this up simply.

Our home in Kingsgrove

Our first SIL home is a family house on a quiet residential street in Kingsgrove, southern Sydney — close to shops, parks, and public transport.

  • Your own private room — your space, set up your way
  • Shared living areas — kitchen, living room, and backyard to share with up to 2 housemates
  • Support on site 24/7 — including overnight support
  • A real neighbourhood — buses, Kingsgrove shops, and green spaces nearby

We keep the home small on purpose: with a maximum of 3 residents, support stays personal and the house feels like a home — not a service.

The same team, every day

The people who support you at home are Amigo's own support workers — recruited, screened, trained and rostered by us. You get to know a small, consistent team, and they get to know you: how you take your coffee, what a bad day looks like, when you'd rather be left alone. In a house of three, that isn't a service model. It's a household.

What 24/7 support looks like in our SIL home

All support in the home is delivered by our own team. Depending on your plan and goals, that can include:

  • Personal care and daily routines
  • Cooking and meal preparation
  • Medication support
  • Household tasks and keeping your space the way you like it
  • Building daily living skills — at your pace
  • Getting out: shopping, appointments, community activities
  • Overnight support, every night

Your support is planned around your goals, documented in your roster of care, and reviewed with you regularly.

Choosing where you live is a big decision, and there's no rush in it. You're welcome to come and see the home, meet the team, and talk through the support you need — as many times as you'd like. Nothing is decided until you, your family, and the people you'd be living with all feel it's right.

And if it isn't the right home for you, we'll tell you honestly, and help you think about what else might work.

Supported Independent Living — common questions

How do I know if I have SIL funding in my NDIS plan?

SIL funding usually appears in your NDIS plan under Home and Living supports. If you're not sure, your support coordinator or local area coordinator can check with you. If SIL isn't in your plan yet but you need around-the-clock support, an occupational therapy assessment and evidence of your support needs are generally required — we're happy to explain the process when you call.

What's the difference between SIL and SDA?

SIL (Supported Independent Living) funds the support workers who help you at home. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is separate funding for specialised housing itself, for people with very high physical support needs. Our Kingsgrove home is a standard family home with SIL supports — you don't need SDA funding in your plan to live with us.

What do I pay for, and what does the NDIS pay for?

Your NDIS plan pays for your support workers. You pay rent for your room and your own food and personal shopping — the same as anyone living in a share home. You do not pay for electricity, gas, water or sewerage: under NSW tenancy law those are the landlord's responsibility for a home that isn't separately metered, and Amigo covers them. Before you move in we set all of this out in writing, in plain language, so you know exactly what you pay and what the NDIS pays.

Can I choose who I live with?

Yes. Compatibility comes first — before anyone moves in, we arrange meetings between potential housemates and make sure everyone is comfortable. With a maximum of 3 residents, getting the mix right matters, and no move-in is confirmed until it works for everyone in the home.

Can my family and friends visit?

Of course. It's your home. Family and friends are welcome to visit, and we'll agree on any house arrangements together with you and your housemates — the same way any share household would.

How do I refer someone or apply for a vacancy?

Call us on (02) 8004 3922 or submit the enquiry form on this page. We respond within one business day, and the next step is usually a viewing of the home and an informal chat about support needs and goals. Support coordinators can also email contact@amigopersonalcare.com.au.

Ready to find out more?
